H. Edward Lane, III, MD

Dr. Edward Lane grew up making rounds with his father, an orthopaedic surgeon in Northern Virginia. By the time he was a teenager, he was well aware of his own interest in orthopaedic surgery. After working at the Veterans Hospital in high school and in the emergency room during his college days at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, Dr. Lane went on to earn his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He then completed his internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Lane had the privilege of watching the first total hip and knee replacement surgeries done in Northern Virginia when they were performed by his father at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Following eighteen years of orthopaedic practice alongside his father in Falls Church, Dr. Lane joined OrthoVirginia in 2001. Having been involved in the advent of arthroscopic surgery during his residency, Dr. Lane helped to develop some of the early arthroscopic equipment and continues to dedicate a large part of his practice to sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery still today. His other areas of special interest include spinal surgery, total joint arthroplasty, and adult reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Lane is involved in a number of professional medical roles and continues to participate in cutting edge orthopaedic research. Some of his activities include membership on the trauma team at Fairfax Hospital, service as an investigational physician in the early trials of bone mophogenetic protein, work as a terminal ballistic expert consulting with the FBI and Special Forces, and membership on the board of directors of missing and exploited children. Additionally, Dr. Lane is a 1998 inductee in the Virginia Football Hall of Fame and recipient of the Karl Davey Award for his work with regional high school athletes.

Dr. Lane’s greatest loves are his family and close behind, his long-term patients. In his leisure time he is an avid underwater diver and photographer and works with National Geographic Magazine, the Humpback Whale Research Team based in Maui, Hawaii, and Bob and Ed’s Scuba Experience in Tampa, Florida.
